Who We Are
Founded in 1902, the Poughkeepsie Professional Musicians Association
is the oldest artists service organization in the county. Local
238-291 has more than two hundred members representing musicians
of all backgrounds and musical styles. Their members include
the entire personnel of the Hudson Valley Philharmonic, faculty at
area colleges, and many of the area's music teachers and band directors.
Their active membership also includes members of some of the
area's top pop, rock, Latin, and alternative bands as well as the finest
classical and jazz musicians. They record music, play at various venues, and teach
both publicly and privately in our community.
Within the community, the Local is visible from it's promotion
and sponsorship of concerts through the Music Performance Trust
Fund. This fund provides matching funds to hire musicians for
community and educational performances. Many of the free concerts
presented in various town parks are made possible by the
trust fund. The trust fund also provides scholarships for high school
and college age music students. This year the Local 238-291 will
award $2,000 in scholarships.
